What to Do After a Home Insurance Claim Denial

You rely on your home insurance to provide financial security in the face of potential incidents and fiscal relief in their aftermath. However, there may unfortunately come times when your insurance carrier declines to cover losses for which you expected to be compensated. This can be a frustrating and stressful situation, and knowing how to react proactively can make all the difference.

What Should I Do After a Denial?

Time may be of the essence after you’ve received notice that your claim has been rejected. Knowing how to proceed and doing so properly can make all the difference. Still, claims appeal processes may vary somewhat depending on your situation and carrier. Generally, you may want to take the following steps:

  1. Review your denial. Your carrier should have sent you a letter with information regarding their decision. This should specifically include reasons your claim has been denied and may help you understand the ruling.
  2. Compile information. Gather any information you have regarding your case, including photographic and video evidence of damaged property, purchase receipts, repair estimates and correspondence with your claims adjuster. This evidence may be key to your case.
  3. Contact your insurer. Reach out to your carrier or agent to ask about the denial. They may have a dedicated claims appeal department that can offer more information about their decision or provide guidance on further steps.
  4. Submit your appeal. If you still believe your claim was mistakenly denied, you can submit a formal letter discussing the denial and providing the aforementioned evidence.
  5. Seek further guidance (if necessary). Should your appeal be unsuccessful, you can seek additional help, such as from your state’s department of insurance or a lawyer.
